About CIGNAWhat We Do
CIGNA is a global health service organization dedicated to helping the people we serve improve their health, well-being and sense of security. As the health care debate continues in the U.S., CIGNA is committed to making a difference.
CIGNA believes that all individuals should have access to quality and affordable health care. The issues are complex, and there is no single solution to expand coverage. However, we recognize that CIGNA has an important role to play in achieving a reformed, value-based, competitive health care system in which individuals are active participants.
As one of the largest investor-owned health and benefits organizations in the United States, we are uniquely positioned to lead that charge, because of our ability to focus on the whole person. We are a leader in health, pharmacy, behavioral, dental, disability, life, accident, and international insurance plans. We’re able to combine these capabilities to serve as health advocates for customers and helping them to live healthy lifestyles. CIGNA and its subsidiaries are major providers of employee benefits offered through the workplace.
Whether people are having babies… getting in shape… managing a chronic disease… overcoming illness of injury… or just coping with life… we are on their side, around the world.
CIGNA's Roots
CIGNA was formed in 1982 through the combination of the Connecticut General Corporation (CG) and the Insurance Company of North America Corporation (INA). Today CIGNA's logo, the Tree of Life, symbolizes the corporation’s culture, mission and products.
Like a strong tree, CIGNA has deep roots. INA was founded in 1792 in Philadelphia after meetings in Independence Hall. Connecticut General was founded in Hartford as a life insurance company. CIGNA’s formation combined a leading property-casualty insurer with a leading supplier of life insurance and employee benefits.
