Looking for an opportunity to be a key member of our business team? Our ULTRA Underwriting Training Program offers this and much more. The ULTRA Program can prepare you for a satisfying and rewarding career as an Underwriter. As an Underwriter, you will determine the premium rate level and plan design structure for individual cases while working in a consultative manner with our Sales partners to grow our business. Your ability to assess risk and drive business results will help ensure sustainable growth for your career, our customers, and our Company.


The program is designed for recent college graduates interested in a results-oriented career on the front line of our business. The program provides extensive learning opportunities within Cigna’s Group Insurance (CGI) business, a leading provider of Group Life, Accident, and Disability products, and our Core Medical business which provides premium health care products and services to individuals and employer groups across the nation.


Training classes and final job assignments may be available in Chattanooga, TN; Denver, CO; Franklin, TN; Hartford, CT; Philadelphia, PA; and Phoenix, AZ.



Challenge Yourself

Our ULTRA program is designed to prepare you specifically for the business line you will be supporting, whether that’s Group Insurance or Healthcare. The program offers you the opportunity to learn by combining traditional classroom-based curriculum with “on the job” experiences designed to provide you with an exciting balance of learning styles.


The curriculum includes classroom sessions on:

  • Insurance Basics & Risk Dynamics
  • CGI & Healthcare Products & Services
  • Underwriting & Risk Selection
  • Influencing & Negotiation Skills


Structured practical work experience includes:

  • Gaining real world experience by assisting in case work and ultimately owning a book of business
  • Individualized training and mentoring by experienced underwriters
  • Management coaching and structured feedback processes
  • Hands-on learning with key underwriting systems and tools

Teach Yourself

Participants are part of a comprehensive underwriting training program, learning from leading industry professionals through hands-on experience and one-on-one coaching. As a member of the program, you will learn to:

  • Underwrite for our Healthcare, Dental, Life, Accident, and Disability product portfolio’s as well as the core principals utilized in assessing risk based upon Cigna's standards
  • Determine what an acceptable risk is and develop appropriate premiums to be charged for accepting the risk
  • Partner with our Sales team to solve employer benefit design issues and consultatively address needs
  • Interact with the industry’s key broker and client communities

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience
  • A GPA of 3.0 or better preferred
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Focused on prompt and effective issue resolution: bias for addressing issues person to person
  • Strong analytical skills with demonstrated ability to identify problems and initiate appropriate action
  • Demonstrated application of mathematical skills
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Superior teamwork skills and demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective business relationships via phone
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a high volume work environment (able to balance multiple tasks and move effectively from case to case)
  • Eligibility to work in the U.S. on a permanent, full- time basis
