Corporate Responsibility

We embrace corporate responsibility as an opportunity to improve the health, well-being and sense of security of the communities where we live and work. Joining the Cigna team gives you many opportunities to help us give back.

We’re in the business of helping people. Here are examples of what we do – in addition to our daily jobs – and how you can get involved:

National campaigns and major projects

  • March of Dimes/March for Babies – National sponsors since 1995; our team regularly ranks in the top 10 nation-wide.
  • United Way – Annual participation in fundraising events and Cigna Day of Caring at select locations, for our campaign every fall.  Collectively, we donate over $1 million each year.
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation – $1 million sponsor of the MLK Memorial dedicated in 2011 in Washington D.C.
  • Wye River Group Knowledge Exchange Network – $1 million pledge to study healthcare worldwide.
  • NEADS – Sponsor a Puppy program for the deaf and disabled.
  • Support for America’s military – A broad program that includes direct grants, employee gift matching and career development.

Running, walking, and biking with Cigna team members

  • Jim Calhoun Cancer Challenge Ride – title sponsor since 2008 of this “Coaches vs. Cancer” bike race.
  • Lance Armstrong Foundation LiveStrong Challenge.
  • Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk for the Cure.
  • National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) Walks.
  • MS150 Bike Races.
  • Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure – sponsor of races across the United States.
  • Walt Disney World Marathon – title sponsor  since 2009.

Volunteering in the office

  • Big Brothers/Big Sisters – an office-based mentoring program for elementary school children that Cigna has been involved with since 2006.
  • Healthy Steps – a program for 2nd grade students that  promotes healthy living through interactive stations on health and wellness, a fitness class, healthy lunch showcase, and various skits and demonstrations.
  • My Friend Taught Me – an award-winning tutoring program for children in 3rd grade through 6th grade that we created in 1993 and continue to manage.

Employee-driven corporate philanthropy

  • Cigna Matching Gifts Program.  We match individual employee gifts to special education, colleges and universities, and arts and cultural organizations.
  • Cigna Foundation Community Caring Awards.  Our employee volunteer recognition program includes Grants for Givers, Volunteer of the Month, Volunteer of the Year, and Team Volunteer Awards.
  • Cigna Healthy Lifestyle Grants. We make the connection between personal health and charitable giving by awarding a $100 grant to charities selected by employees who participate in healthy events such as walk-a-thons, bike-a-thons and 5k races.

It’s easy being Green

At Cigna, we value our environmental programs because we believe that a healthier planet leads to healthier people. As a result, Cigna takes its environmental responsibilities seriously and recognizes its obligations to contribute to resolving local and global environmental issues, by reducing our environmental impact and moving toward sustainability.

Here are some examples of Cigna's many recent environmental initiatives and accomplishments:

  • Cigna recycles over 4 million pounds of office paper per year.
  • Many of Cigna's office locations have a year-round collection of cell phones, batteries, ink cartridges, writing utensils, and other reusable materials.
  • In 2011, Cigna contributed $55,000 of unused branded items and office supplies through in-kind donations to Good360, an organization that helps reduce waste by giving unused items to non-profit organizations.
  • Through our secure shredding program we have saved 13,744,019 gallons of water and more than 33,000 trees.
In the past year, about 20 million paperless transactions were completed on our online portals and our electronic claim management system handled more than 70 million claims.
  • Cigna equipment disposal specifies a zero landfill policy; we remarket or recycle over 18,000 devices every year.
  • Cigna's vehicle fleet exceeds the national average fuel efficiency—the majority of our vehicles are 4-cylinder with alternative fuel (E85) capabilities and hybrid engines, and are classified as partial zero emissions vehicles (PZEV).

In addition to taking these steps toward improving our environmental impact, Cigna encourages its people to think green both at work and at home by engaging a cross-functional “green team” consisting of over 300 site and functional volunteer leads throughout the company. These volunteers take actions that help educate their Cigna colleagues on ways they can reduce the environmental impact of their work sites and daily operations.
